1st grade Igloos:

1) SMARTboard images/discuss

2) Demonstrate drawing igloos
3D appearance, curve the lines around it
-outline with black Sharpie
-Color heavy with white crayon

3) Paint with blue liquid watercolor (whole paper)

4) Let dry (students can draw animals or arctic things if finished early)

Class 2:

1) On 12" z 18" blue, draw a horizon line of some sort

2) Use a white crayon to add details (a COLD winter landscape)

(My other classes fingerpainted with white, and added thumbprint penguins first during 2nd class - this class was 1 day behind from missing a day....lasted 3 cycles/classes if doing finger painting too)

3) Fold paper in 1/2. cut twice on fold, "pop out" the fold and bend edges.

4) Glue cut-out igloo to the pop out

5) Add penguins, polar bears, pine trees, and other pop outs using same technique.

REALLY successful lesson with great feelings of accomplishment for all!! :)

ZOOM SNOWMEN

I borrowed this idea from Deep Space Sparkle...popular site for great art lessons/ideas.

1) 1st, I review cool colors with 2nd grade, and explain why cool colors are grouped together.
-I even touch upon purple not just being a "girl color."
-Real life application, and we just rid of that myth before someone even says it. :)

2) On 9" x 12" blue, blue-green, or purple, I show students how to draw a close-up snowman.
-Start with the half cirlce face.
- Draw a large 2nd circle (half of a half = 1/4). Some fun math facts/applications.
- Add details (borrow the circle line for a striped scarf = fixing a 'mistake.)
-Do the same with the carrot nose (use the circle line as a line on the carrot - especially if using oil crayon to draw).
-I let students draw in oil crayon or pencil for this one....we color with oil crayon/pastel and then finish with white tempera.
-Results are stunning....made a great display for January, and the local newspaper covered the story. :)
-Perfect simple lesson to start Jnanuary back at school.

2nd Grade Abstract Shoe, Seconday Colors

1) Students viewed O'Keefe floral images, and discussed "zoom."

2) Students viewed other enlarged objects and guessed what they really were based on clues.

3) Students learned how to do a shoe rubbing with crayon (rub over your paper on top of your shoe, shoe off beforehand).

4) Students selected 1 of several rubbings, and circled just 1 part of the rubbing.

5) Students then used that specific, "zoomed" section to enlarge onto 12" x 18" white paper.

6) Next class, students learned about secondary colors, a new group of colors to them.

7) Students painted each section carefully.

8) Last class, students carefully outlined the original lines with small brushes and black tempera.

9) Students wrote about their artwork, giving clues as to what the artwork was about...for example, "I leave this on the ground when I walk."
